Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism

The Union of American Hebrew Congregations grieves over the tragic cycle of violence that grips the administered territories. Violence provokes violence, and one day's instigator becomes the next day's victim. Therefore, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations associates itself with the position of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism on violence in the territories, as expressed in a resolution adopted at its Ninth Biennial Convention.

The resolution adopted in October 1988, states:

  1. The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism condemns the violence by local residents occurring in the territories.
  2. The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism expresses its profound concern over human rights violations in the territories, and over the increase of 'exceptional' cases of misconduct by Israeli soldiers — always with an understanding of the tremendous difficulties faced by the soldiers in the fulfillment of their policing duties.
  3. The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism calls on the military authorities to increase awareness of human rights, and to continue investigating and taking appropriate judicial measures against those soldiers who violate the military code and orders of their superiors."
