Jena Prystowsky (she/her) is a wife, a mom, a writer, and a blogger for Gaudylanguage.com, a blog geared toward creative entrepreneurs, hobbyists, and professionals. She also hosts the podcast The Gaudy: Insights, where she interviews artists and other creatives about their work. Jena is a member of Temple Emanu-El in Dallas, TX and is involved in the choir and the Within and Beyond Our Walls anti-racism task force.

When my husband and I learned that we were going to be parents, we wondered how the actual birth would go. We had heard some devastating statistics about the maternal mortality rate in the United States. Black women in the United States die from pregnancy-related causes at three to four times the rate of white women, regardless of education, income, or other socioeconomic factors.
